It’s 2 PM. You’ve spent the morning at work, in meetings or on Zoom calls. You’re feeling proud because you’ve done a decent job so far, sticking with your New Year’s resolution to eat healthier and make better food choices. But right now… the snack cabinet is calling your name. You wonder, “Is there any chocolate in there? A leftover bag of something sweet from Christmas?” Or maybe you’re into snacking on something salty… so you’re searching for chips. Mmmmmm….chips.
Honestly, this is me on the daily. Two o’clock is the time when I’m tired from getting up at 5 AM to get my family ready for their day, my lunch feels like it was hours ago, the endorphins of my workout are long gone, and I’m searching for a mid-afternoon pick me up.
The good news is that snacking is actually good for you — thank goodness! It keeps you from getting ravenously hungry, which can cause you to overeat during meals. It also helps regulate your mood, keep your mind sharp, and gives you energy to get you through the rest of your day. But not all snacks are created equal. They aren’t all healthy, and portion control is important.
Before heading to the snack cabinet, drink 8 oz. of water. Your grumbling tummy could be telling you that you’re dehydrated versus hungry. If you’re still hungry 10 minutes post your glass of water, then snack away!
I’m not a nutritionist, but I’m someone who’s successfully stayed healthy & in the gym throughout multiple pregnancies while maintaining a demanding work travel schedule. My energy levels, productivity at work, and relationships have all improved from figuring out the snacks that work well for me. My recommendations are all things that are tried & tested over years of time.
Over the years, I’ve found that these snacks are not only delicious, they’re packed with good nutrients to keep me going. (They’re also Whole 30 compliant.)
Whatever you fancy for your snack, I recommend stocking it in your snack cupboard (or in your lunch box) so it’s ready for you, when you’re ready for it. And to ensure you don’t reach for those potato chips or chocolate…. Why not just get rid of those snacks all together? Purge your cabinets so you only have healthy choices.
And lastly, my go to afternoon beverage is a cup of coffee with Nut Pod creamer. Coffee is an appetite suppressant. Pair it with any of the above snacks and you should be good to go until dinner!
