Turning a house into a home begins with the five senses, and the easiest of them all is smell.
When you walk into your home after a long day at work, what do you want to feel? Relaxed? Fresh? Playful? That’s a good starting point for choosing a scent to set the tone.
Here are my 5 favorite candles and the feelings they evoke in my home.

This O.G. candle scent is used by your favorite boutiques and spas alike for a good reason. I have yet to meet a woman who dislikes this scent! And it’s the one I get asked about most often when I’m hosting get-togethers. As an added bonus, the signature indigo jar makes the perfect bookshelf accessory.

I’ve been buying this scent for half of my life, and it’s still in my cart every year. Tyler says it best on its website: “A floral, woody blend of patchouli and vanilla with a heavy musk undertone.” It smells like the creatively sparking side of perfume, where the scent carries you into a reminiscent daydream. If that sounds fun to you, buy it! You’ll thank me for this one.

This one is a darling scent — if you like eucalyptus, which can be a controversial smell. If you like it, you’re shocked to hear everyone else doesn’t. I know, I know… This one isn’t that overly-heavy eucalyptus scent, though. It’s a soft, spa-like scent combined with fresh mint leaves to create the feeling of relaxation you get from a full-body massage.

Imagine strolling down St. Charles, turning into the Garden District to look at historic brick houses with large columns, porch swings, and iron gates. As you walk, the faint smell of cinnamon and beignets fills your nose, bringing a soft smile to your face. That’s what this candle smells like, and if you have fond memories of Nola, then you need it.

This one is the priciest of my recommendations, but I think it’s worth it. NEST’s website describes this grapefruit scent as: “notes of pink pomelo grapefruit and watery nuances that are blended with lily of the valley and coriander blossom.” All I know is that it’s delightful, bright, and a lovely scent as you WFH.
One thing to keep an eye on when you’re candle shopping is the “burn time”. This one is *technically* 2-3x the price of a Bath & Body Works candle, but it also packs 3x the burn time as those. I’m assuming there’s something in the wax structure that allows for a slower burn for the pricier candles. (If you know, please explain in the comments!)
Sometimes other sites have $10-20 off deals, so shop around. Or, if you hate browsing sites for deals, check out Rakuten — a FREE app that tells you if another website is offering your products for cheaper and how much money you’ll save.
